  1. Kazakhstan - Consular Information Sheet

  4. Country Description:  Kazakhstan is a nation undergoing profound political
  5. and economic change.  It is a new independent state still in the process of
  6. stabilizing its relations with neighboring countries.  Political activities
  7. have been peaceful.  Tourist facilities are not highly developed, and many
  8. of the goods and services taken for granted in other countries are not yet
  9. available.  Internal air travel generally operates but suffers disruptions.

  11. Entry Requirements:  A passport and visa are required.  Visas are issued at
  12. the Kazakhstan Embassy (on the basis of a letter of invitation from a
  13. Kazakhstani organization) and at the Almaty Airport.  Visas issued at the
  14. airport without a letter of invitation are only valid for three days.
  15. Kazakhstan immigration officials consider visas for Russia, Uzbekistan,
  16. Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, and Belarus to be valid for transit (up to
  17. three days) through Kazakhstan.  U.S. citizens can contact the Kazakhstan

  21. Medical Facilities:  Medical care in Kazakhstan is limited.  There is a
  22. severe shortage of basic medical supplies, including disposable needles,
  23. anesthetics, and antibiotics.  Incidence of infectious diseases is generally
  24. higher than in the U.S., and immunizations are unavailable.  Drinking only
  25. boiled or bottled water will help guard against cholera, which has been
  26. reported.  Elderly travelers and those with existing health problems may be
  27. at risk due to inadequate medical facilities.  The U.S. Embassy maintains a
  28. list of English speaking physicians in the area.  Doctors and hospitals
  29. often expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S. medical
  30. insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers have
  31. found that in some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific
  32. overseas coverage, including medical evacuation coverage, has proved to be

  37. Crime Information:  Common street crime has increased, especially at night,
  38. and some robbery victims have been assaulted.  Robbers congregate around
  39. hotels that cater to foreigners.  Walking in a group or utilizing an
  40. official metered taxi with door to door service is the best way to traverse
  41. the cities after sunset.  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should
  42. be reported immediately to the local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or
  43. consulate.  Useful information on safeguarding valuables, protecting
  44. personal security, and other matters while traveling abroad is provided in
  45. the Department of State pamphlets, "A Safe Trip Abroad" and "Tips for
  46. Travelers to Russia."  They are available from the Superintendent of

  49. Currency Regulations:  Kazakhstan is a cash only economy.  Traveler's checks
  50. and credit cards are rarely accepted.  Kazakhstan has its own currency, the
  51. ten'ge.  U.S. dollars can be changed only at official exchange offices or in
  52. banks.  Anyone caught dealing on the black market can expect harsh punishment.

  54. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  55. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in
  56. illegal drugs are strict and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  57. and fines.

  59. Registration:  Americans who register at the Consular Section of the U.S.
  60. Embassy may obtain updated information on travel and security within
  61. Kazakhstan.
